Body
As an instructor at Lakeland, you have a few options for contacting students in your courses. Many instructors choose to keep all communication contained within Blackboard as an easy to link to course material or other content. Other instructors choose to use students’ Lakeland Student Email to communicate and keep a record of the conversation beyond the confines of the course.
Instructors should avoid using personal email address for communication to protect security, sensitive academic records and personal information. Using both your Lakeland email address and the student’s Lakeland Student Email address helps provide those protections and will reinforce and maintain the professional nature of your communications.
Contacting Students Through Blackboard
When you message a group of students through Blackboard, each student receives an individual message and email. Students will not see anyone else the message was sent to, similar to using a blind carbon copy (bcc:) in an email.
From inside one of your courses in Blackboard, click the Messages tab at the top.

When the new tab opens, click the New Message button at the top-right corner.

The New Message page opens. Click the “To:” field and a drop-down box gives you several options for messaging individual students, groups of students, instructors or everyone in the course.

From there, compose the message and when finished click the Send button. Replies will appear in your Blackboard course and you will receive an email notification when you receive a new message or reply.

From your myLakeland home page, click the “Faculty” tab on the left side bar, then click Faculty Self Service.

|
In the Faculty Self Service section in the center of the page, click the Class List button.

|
A new tab opens. To see the list of students currently enrolled in a course, click the course under the Subject column.

The new page contains information about the course and the list of students. To email an individual student, a group of students or the entire class, click the box to the left of the student’s name. When ready, click the Mail icon on the right.

Your default email app will open and create a new message with the student email address(es) loaded in the “To:” field.
Please note: Your default email app may automatically use your personal email account instead of your Lakeland email account.
Please note: If you prefer that the group of students not be aware of others who receive the email, or you wish to avoid having everyone in the group receive all replies, you can copy the email addresses from the “To:” field and move them to the “Bcc:” field.
