Tips for Successful Assessments

Please use the suggested browsers Firefox or Chrome with the Blackboard Learn system. In addition:

  1. Your computer maintenance should be up to date: Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware applications installed and updated. Operating System Service Packs & updates, etc.

  2. It is best to use a computer with a wired connection (Ethernet cable) to the Internet (modem). Wireless connections can be unreliable due to interference. You can get disconnected and never know why. Think of a bad or dropped cell phone call you have experienced.
Note: Disable your computer's wireless receiver when using a wired connection to mitigate any conflict in services.

  3. Use the recommended browsers and know how to manage your browser:
Perform the Browser Check located on the Blackboard login page and follow through with any recommendations.
  4. Java is a required browser plug-in for usage with some interactive Blackboard tools, such as Chat and Voice Email. Do I have Java?

  5. Don't tamper with your computer once you launch a test:  Maximize or resize your browser window before you begin a test. Resizing your browser causes a screen refresh and can be interpreted as a 'Submit' by Backboard.  Do not open any other browser windows, programs or applications.

  6. Don't navigate through your exam using the browser controls or your keyboard:  Do not use your browser Forward and Back buttons, or refresh the page while in a Blackboard assessment. Use the Next Question navigation button (>) to proceed to the next question if questions are delivered one at a time.

  7. Remember to use single-mouse clicks when making selections in your exam.  Always single-click test link buttons and all buttons in the assessment (Begin, Save, Next Question, Save All Answers (if available) and Save and Submit.
Note: Be patient when waiting for the test to load or respond. Double-clicking can submit your exam.

  8. Be aware of ISP session timeouts:  Periodically save (Save All Answers) your exam once every 15 to 30 minutes, if the test questions display all at once. Do not click the "Save All Answers" or the "Save Answer" button after each question. Questions save automatically and save upon using the Next Question button (>). Reminder: Do not double-click. any item in a test.

  9. Always log out of Blackboard after each session. Closing the window is not logging out. Use the Logout button in the top right corner to keep your session data clean. If you have been logged into Blackboard for an extended amount of time, log out, restart your computer and log back in before attempting any important quiz or exam.
    • Reminder: Restarting your computer frees up your computer memory (RAM) which is consumed through computer program and website usage.
